Helping you navigate the complexities of workplace ethics.

I am a Certified Ethics Officer with The Ethics Institute (https://www.tei.org.za/) and have been a supporter of TEI since 2017. I also hold an MPhil Applied Ethics (St Augustine College).

Making sure that your workplace (business, professional practice, training institution or government department) functions ethically makes good business sense.

Workplaces that operate ethically are more likely to avoid unnecessary risks. They are also more like to have

  • improved employee morale
  • better customer satisfaction
  • a better reputation

And so are more likely to be financially successful. Key to this, according to SA’s King IV Report on Corporate Governance (https://www.iodsa.co.za/page/king-iv), is building an ethical culture.

HELPING YOU BUILD AN ETHICAL CUTLURE USING THE FOLLOWING TOOLS:

  • Undertake an ethics risk assessment. This can be done using an online tool or doing focus groups and interviews, depending on the context.
  • Develop and implement an ethics management strategy, including developing an ethical culture. An ethics risk assessment and management strategy provide the detail for getting a practical handle on ethics issues.
  • Align your ethics management strategy with relevant sector codes, the common good and your own company policies
  • Establish and support your social and ethics committee. While the Companies Act requires some companies to have a social and ethics committee (SEC) at board level, the King IV Report recommends that all entities establish this responsibility at the board.
  • Manage conflicts of interest by ensuring a shared understanding of what this means and having clear protocols in place.
  • Develop whistle-blowing protocols to nurture a sense of confidence and safety for all stakeholders .
  • Undertake investigations into allegations of breaches of ethics.
